Airfield

Omarama – translation “Place of Light”

The airfield, NZOA AD 2 – 51.1, is an uncertificated unattended airfield operating on 119.1mhz and is owned by a company whose shareholders are the Waitaki District Council and the Omarama Soaring Centre Inc.

The airfield is located on the north side of the Omarama township, is 1380 ft above sea level and has two irrigated parallel 1400m grass runways 27L/R and 09L/R. A clearly marked winch launching strip to the north of the runways is rough and unlandable.

The majority of aviation activity relates to gliding which operates on 119.1mhz within a 5km radius of the field and on 133.55mhz beyond that. The inbound visual reporting points are Killermont, Sailors Cutting and Ohau Turnoff. At any one time visiting aircraft can encounter aero towing gliders, winch launching gliders, self launching gliders, gliders in circuit to land, helicopter traffic, microlight and general aviation use. The Omarama Model Flying Club operate on weekends from a small strip to the immediate south of the airfield.

Visiting Omarama is a rewarding aviation experience because opportunities from the airfield include outstanding flights in the Southern Alps, the McKenzie basin and Central Otago.

Pilots intending to visit Omarama should ensure they are familiar with the airfield and its operations by reading the AIP Chart
